Twitter Storm: Cenk's Turkish Vacation, German Porn, Japan Nuclear Attacks, etc.

In this week’s edition of Twitter Storm, The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur answers viewer questions about the purpose of his recent vacation in Turkey, the unlikely source of his favorite German catch phrase, whether the United States should have dropped nuclear bombs on Japan during World War II, if Obama will live up to his promise of “change we can believe in” if he delivers on carbon emissions, and whether Twitter Storm is – gasp! – cursed!

My grandad and dad had some stupid fake German they'd say all the time and I asked my German teacher what it meant and she looked at me like I was the dumbest person. And I got the highest grades in German in my whole year, kinda ironic

Hey @Tim Gruver — the idea of neat distinction between military and civilian targets didn't exist in WWII.  Nothing remotely like the technology of today, that allows bombs to precisely strike specific buildings, existed in the 1940s.  The British in Europe and the Americans in the Pacific attempted to target "only" military targets and failed.  In Japan in particular, manufacturing was dispersed in small factories in neighborhoods making precision bombing all the more impossible.  In Europe, the Americans stuck with daylight bombing but ended up doing as much damage to civilian areas as the British who gave up any attempt to avoid civilians.

In other words, what you're really asking for is that we didn't engage in any strategic bombing.  Good idea Tim.

why did fire bombing kill so many more people than nukes i figured nukes is the most destructive bomb?

I always love it when Kim Horcher hosts the Twitter Storm! On a more serious note, If I could go back in time, I would have prevented Hiroshima and Nagasaki from being bombed.

"Schlurpen" is even more wrong, by the way. "Schluppen" at least sounds kind of like "schlucken".

That German student made a spelling mistake (dass/das) that is pretty much exactly as annoying as mixing up "their" and "there" is for English-speakers.

    "Schlürf das. Das sind Vitamine!"

Basically means "Drink it, it´s vitamines!"

    Yes, yikes…
