I'm glad to see you are assuming you won't have heat. All these people that store rice…20 minutes cook time, and dried beans…4 hours or more dumbfound me. I don't live in a place with lots of trees to burn, and if I did, I don't know that I would want to advertise to the neighbors that I have food. And I sure don't want to use up my gas canisters. I think you are smart to assume you won't have power, because really, isn't one of the most likely scenarios a weather-related power outage.

thank you for assuring apartment dwellers that disaster prep can be done

I teach that method in my seminars. It makes the best way to train the "new bee". Great Video.

I'm curious about the amount of fiber. It's about double the recommended intake. Is that what you normally eat, or is it a result of the types of foods you're storing? Have you stored the extra water your body will need?

  21. Luca FuocoNovember 13, 2016 at 5:33 am

I think you can survive 3 weeks with that food. What you need is water.
Lots of water. Means of collecting, filtering and purying water.
    Priority number 1: water.

The list you showed has striking similarity to my own list. I keep a standard kitchen storage for about 1 months/ 2 persons and a long life emergency storage for another month/2 persons . I made my own water source including purification, and keep a gas stove that will provide cooking facility for 6-8 weeks. Note that your calorie count listed 39030. For 2 weeks (2787 cal/day ), this will probably result in gain of weight! If combined with a diet, you can survive on a much lower calorie count for a much longer period, provided you have clean water. As rule of thumb take your % of body fat and count 7777 cal for each kilo of body fat. Records on the siege of Stalingrad and the famish winter in Holland (1945 ) provide some interesting insights. I guess you have a solid follow-up plan when 2 weeks have passed.

You have a very soothing and methodical voice. I appreciate you sharing this. As a fellow apartment prepper, it's good to see what others are doing with their limited space. It's definitely harder to stock up when you don't have a basement or walk-in pantry!

I just did an inventory, I have enough food on hand for my family of 4 for about 2 months. I have limited space, so it is hard for me to keep 48 cans of fruits and vegetables like is recommended, but I feel good about what I have. I haven't done the Mountain House route yet; I just honestly don't think we would make good use of it for the money. I do want to get some Morning Moo milk alternative.
